Uniformity of dissecting microscope appearances in proximal small intestine.

چکیده

The uniformity of mucosal morphology within the distal duodenum and the first loop of jejunum, ie, the area usually biopsied, was examined at necropsy in 116 children. In those with no evidence of gastrointestinal disease there was no significant variation within this area, but in 25 children with mucosal abnormality, variation occurred within a small area. The crests of the plicae circulares were more often more severely abnormal than the area in the valleys between. Owing to the small size of biopsy specimens, it is apparent from this study that such specimens may not be representative of the proximal small intestinal mucosa in children suffering from the disorders of the small intestine encountered in this study.

Dissecting microscope appearance of small bowel mucosa in children.

The technique of small bowel biopsy is now well established in childhood, but reports have largely concentrated on the histological appearances and enzyme activity of the biopsied mucosa (Anderson and Townley, 1962; Burke, Kerry, and Anderson, 1965; Kerpel-Fronius, Jani, and Fekete, 1966; Kuitunen, 1966; Launiala, Kuitunen, and Visakorpi, 1966; Nordio, Lamedica, Berio, and Vignola, 1966; Townle...

Post-mortem examination of a small intestine in the coeliac syndrome.

Histological examination of the small intestine after death is almost invariably valueless because of autolysis. This is the reason why the lesion of idiopathic steatorrhoea or coeliac syndrome has only been recognized in recent years with the introduction of peroral biopsy. These biopsies can be profitably examined under the dissecting microscope (Rubin, Brandborg, Phelps, and Taylor, 1960; Ho...

Effect of Small Intestine Strangulation Obstruction on Clinical and Histopathological Parameters An Experimental Study in Donkeys

To study clinical and histopathological changes occur within the first 12 hours of strangulating obstruction of the small intestine in equine, twenty five adult donkeys were used in an experimental study. Strangulation obstruction of the small intestine was performed for 3, 6, 9 and 12 hours, respectively. Clinical examination was done before surgery and at 3 hours intervals postoperatively. Af...

Disaccharidase levels in the small intestine in patients with diarrhoea following vagotomy and pyloroplasty.

Diarrhoea is a common sequel to vagotomy and pyloroplasty but its cause is unknown. One of our patients who developed this complication had an abnormal lactose barium meal and responded well to a lactose-free diet. This led us to make a systematic study of disaccharidase activity in the small intestine in patients with diarrhoea following vagotomy and pyloroplasty. The small-intestinal disaccha...

Morphology With Age

Walker-Smith, John (1972). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 47, 80. Variation of small intestinal morphology with age. A study of small intestinal three-dimensional morphology from 85 childhood necropsies, using the dissecting microscope, has shown that there is a variation in morphology with age. While finger-like villi occurred frequently in the small intestine of neonates, particularly in t...
